This beautiful piece would have been worn centrally either at forhead or around the neck.
Warm wishes

These usually come in pair and would be used as braid finials haging high on both shoulders ( Harratine hair not very long) or at least loose temporals
Similarly built pieces could be found elsewhere in south east morocco and south west algeria where a shell where the design follows the same scheme: shell rings or chunks framed by two lateral rows of coins with some plastic, coral, silver or metal beads thrown here and there
The bias of Sarah could come from the fact that these pendants were heavily used in modern jewelry as a central element of necklaces
Hi Ayis, Thanks for the info, I am sure I have a pic of one being worn at the centre of the head... I shall try to locate it and post it. Possibly not today!! Busy day ! I think you are correct regarding the necklace concept , these are later creations.
Warm wishes
Sarah

I would also say they come in pairs, have seen them. But I own also only one because the pairs for sale now have plastic beads and I do not like that. Yours is very beautiful and old, nice old coins I see one of 1876! I put a picture of mine to compare them.
A truly beautiful piece!
