For Chantal: Snow in Tucson!

The rare bit of snow in Tucson! It's an El Nino winter, so wet and cold here, though yesterday was shorts and T-shirt weather in the 70's!

  • Wahhhhhhhhhhh, I remember taking pics of these weirdoes when I was somewhere in your desert a couple years ago..........am glad things are back to normal, i.e. t shirt and shorts and sunshine!  Will always remember the temperature in Phoenix, worse than the Sahara when I crossed it( in my youth...). Thanks for the pic.

  • Whose Cactus garden is this?  Wonderful!  I love it !!

  • Linda, this is our backyard.  Normally, it has a wonderful view of the Catalina Mountains, but they are blocked from sight due to the snow.  Some of the saguaro cacti were planted, but otherwise this is natural Sonoran Desert.  The previous owners of the house were cacti fans, so we have quite a collection including lots of exotics like night bloomers.  There are about 220 saguaros alone on our property.  We have coyotes, bobcats, a family of Harris hawks, javelina, rabbits, rattlesnakes, gila monsters, tarantulas and more that come and go.

  • What a wonderful garden.

  • Hope you can visit some time Toya!

  • My mom was a cactus fan.. she loved them and had them too when she lived in Florida,, she took them up here and we had a cactus room built on addition a few years ago but she died last year before she was able to enjoy it. long story short whenever I see these it reminds me of her. We tried to move the big ones but when we had no place to keep them for a while when the building was going on, they got too cold and died.  your garden looks something like the one in Marakesh..  Has it ever snowed like this before?  The cactus will be ok like this?  I wish we could grow them outside..

  • I love cacti too.  I love it when they all bloom in the spring.  The different types of flat-pad cacti, cholla, and barrel all have different-colored flowers.  One of my favorite cactus types is the one that looks like a prickly pear but has mauve purple color instead.  We have some cacti that only bloom at night and are pollinated by bats and huge moths the size of humming birds.  The tarantulas are my favorite creepy-crawlies.  They hang out by our front door in the summer, catching bugs.  Some people pick them up, but I haven't gone that far yet..... Occasionally we find one in the house- though how they get in, I haven't a clue as they're quite big.  The cold is not good for them, but they are quite hardy, more so than the citrus trees that everyone in Arizona has.....  The older saguaros can be hundreds of years old and they've definitely survived frosts many times before.  The desert is hot during the day and very cold at night.

  • Great info. on the animals.........Gardens of paradise for them!

  • Beautiful garden! Never seen one like this with snow! I love cacti too, hope they will not be damaged by the snow. (I know that some take very low temperatures easily, but snow......?). It does look very exciting though!

  • beautiful foto. not always to see the cacti in snow
