Hi Sveltana, Don't know - any ideas? K
I only can say that I didn't see those in Tanah Toraja. And that south of Sulawesi is all muslim. Reminds me Sumbanese mamuli - also symbol of fertility.
But I know that 8 hours from Tanah Toraja there is some other mountain tribe, I met a person who visited them 5 years ago and at that time they were animists and wore almost no clothes at all. Very almost :). Maybe from there or from some other central area.
So it IS Toraja.
They still have strong animistic beliefs. I wrote an article about Funeral Ceremony in Tana Toraja, but we didn't talk about fertility at that moment. Nothing can surprise me after I have seen a wooden sculpture belonging to one of our siberian ethnic groups that looked exactly like a sculpture from - wow - Sulawesi, Indonesia. Even though they commented that sulawesian one was most likely made by balinese craftmen for Sulawesi
