I thought they were from Morocco but maybe you are right in thinking Mali.
Perhaps the experts will weigh in on this. It is very nice to hear that your mother in law used them for her prayers.
These are Mauritanian prayer beads.
Is the silverwork very fine swirls?
They look like older better made ones from the pic....do you have a close up?
These are often found in Morocco, but originate in Mauritania.
