Most of the tattoos are to add a protective symbol to the wearer, Djinn ( Bad spirits are believed to enter the body via openings. The eyes are very vunerable, so are protected in this way and also veiled. A happy person shouls conceal their eyes and at moments of joy you could be more vinerable to the powers of the djinn. Designs may vary form one group to another, but placement facially is generally at the eyes, nose and mouth.

If i am not mistaken this is a newly wed young jewish girl from "goulmima" in south east morocco.
She wears an elaborate wig for it was compulsary for married jewish women to cover their hair.
Jewish are compliant with torah laws wich forbad tattoos. So this "body painting" on her forhead must have been made out of saffron diluted in water and usually bearing the name of "khamsa"
The earrings are fabulous as are the necklaces
Fascinating and beautiful adornment - but the girl seems to be truly a girl. Sad to think of someone that young being married off, quite possibly not to the groom of her choice. While the photo might be old, the custom prevails in many parts of the world, even today.
