  • Hi Linda, - Yes, I can now even independently of you confirm that this is Hungarian, though this work was also done (following the Hungarians) in Poland, during the time when it was made, i.e. when the two countries were part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. If you ever do manage to get access to Facebook I posted a lot of material on the belt of this kind (very closely similar) which I showed there. With a lot of searching I actually managed to find a similar belt to ours on the internet. I shall see whether I can retrieve any of that without undue difficulty!
  • Linda, - Here you are, for an interesting link on Trocadero: http://www.trocadero.com/cgi-bin/search1.cgi. Note that there is MORE THAN ONE belt shown as Hungarian/Polish and also look at  the resemblances between them. The captions, however, come from the same Polish museum catalogue that claimed that the Albanian/Ottoman belt-type which we (you and I) have been showing and discussing is "Turkoman", and I do not necessarily believe that we are looking at a 17th c article: in this instance, I agree with you that 18th/19th is far more likely, judging from the materials, and bearing in mind that the baroque in that part of the world continued on!
  • Incidentally, on our belt there is no silver, only pewter! I was surprised to find that out ... But it is a very charming and attractive article, very "old world".
  • SORRY: ACTING ON THAT LINK, ONCE YOU GET TO TROCADERO WITH IT, TYPE IN "Hungarian belt" AS YOUR SEARCH ITEM. THAT WILL SHOW SEVERAL BELTS WHICH ARE RELEVANT.
  • Hi Joost I found it and did go on your sight. For some reason I can get on it if I google particular words but can not just go in through you name as I once was able to. I only put this up after I found it on your sight and the one on trocadero.  I like my buckle but like your belt best of all that were posted. I sold this to someone who seemed to say she knew what it was. I got this from a guy who lives in Hawaaii, sells in New Mexico during the fairs  and sells mostly Hawaiian jewelry. I also purchased that incredible kingfisher headdress from him as well!
