This is from the Highlands in Papua New Guinea. Worn at festivals. The carving, and also the colouring, are entirely characteristic. A nice example.
For more examples of this type see e.g. the two illustrated on p. 111 of Truus Daalder, *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*, and discussion on p. 73. Chris Boylan, in discussing the X shape which is also frequent on Highland shields (see his recent book), points out that this is often believed to be a stylised human figure. Much of the art of the PNG Highlands is highly abstract and geometrical.
