A spectacular and unique piece! I am betting that this was made on commission for a specific person. Love the star at the end of the throne verse. It's so beautiful and yet so approachable... as a spiritual object should be.
this is fantastic!
Thanx Peter
Your guess is actually the one that makes more sense....given the hanging bails position, this box could very well be worn like the ones from Hadramaut and eastern yemen.
I was puzzled by the use of gold, but then the proximity of Oman would explain that, likely a commissioned work for someone important!
I looked through Marjorie Ransom's book and she does have beautiful boxes which have raised half-beads. I second your guesses that this is from the Hadramaut, made for a special person. Congrats again.
I liked this piece when you posted it on Facebook, Alaa, and still do. The difference is that now we know more about it than the info which you already supplied, which makes it even better! I fully support the notion of a Yemen/Oman combination: as you say, the gold initially seems puzzling, but would be Omani, as a component, in a piece predominantly Hadramaut. And important and interesting piece!
