  • These hallmarks are very beautiful, particularly the moon, star one. The other mark looks like some sort of tughra. ( have just learned this term in relationship to jewelry,  so I may be totally wrong here)

  • What do these hallmarks mean? Maker's marks? They are very attractive.

  • Lower one reads "Dar el beïda" or Casablanca which is where it was made, star in the moon is the usual hallmark associated with cities of casablanca, Azemmour and El jadida, maybe the local "amin's" or silversmith's chief!

    Turn of the 20th century.

My grandmother used to tell me she and her mother used to have a pair of these big salamander's khmasa each

  • Thank you Ayis! You are so full of information. Don't you wish your grandmother had saved those khamsas for you?

  • Think the lower mark looks a little like a tughra, too, Patti. But not the Ottoman ones I am more familiar with. I will be off in March for my usual half year in Bulgaria where I intend to seek out the traditional jewellery more than I have previously done. So hopefully I will see a few more.

  • I would love to go to Bulgaria! Absolutely, look for the jewelry and bring home some to show us.
