Beautiful! I love the carved coral and the enamelling. Is there a special name for the very peculiar shape of middle part of the belt? Is it a typically Ottoman form?

Betty, I am just familiar with the term "pafti" for the whole buckle. But the central shape seems familiar to me in Islamic art. Maybe zoomorphic?
I can`t help feeling that the central shape recalls shapes in Bukharan/Uxbek jewellery - for good reason. Stylised frogs (rebirth), birds (freedom) etc. abound in it though I doubt their creators were always aware of their significance. (Just a hunch).
That's just what I thought, Frankie. I have recently bought a small vintage enamelled silver pendant I cannot place (I thought it looked vaguely Uzbek/Bukharan) and when I saw Howah's photo it struck me how similar the pendant's shape is to the centre piece of these Ottoman belts. Thanks for sharing your info & ideas!
