Hello Frankie
it is difficult or even not corect to add it to algeria. i will say mali
beautiful and unusual to see with this patterns
Nice you got that one frankie, I am actually still puzzled by these bracelekie after i have had three of them, all different from each other but all belonging to the same style with same etching and patterns.
-A big German collector, friend of mine, confirmed he had bought a pair in Mali where he was told they were Songhai.
-I bought one in south morocco recently from an old dealer who attributed it to "SOUTH ALGERIA" which is likely as well, given the fabulous amount of Algerian jewelry available in Morocco.
-Recently, actually yesterday, i was introduced to a lot of low to medium grade silver jewelry with a pendant with the same circle etching and pendants (present on one of the bracelet i own), the whole lot was labelled as coming from the FON of Benin!! Again, it is likely as many low grade silver jewelry comes from there and is very ill documented.
The fact is that every case is likely and no case fully contradicts another and i would not be surprised to find out or hear about a fourth or a fifth possibility for this type of bracelets!!
Well, all that info. is so interesting.
A. E. the reason I said it was from Algeria was on the evidence of what you previously told me when we met and also the seller identified it as such.
A.O., I had previously thought that such styles were from Mali but I really don`t know.
And now - maybe it`s from the Benin Fon! I love all this sleuthing! And I love the bracelet.
Thank you both.
Dear Frankie; It is a lovely bracelet. If it just could talk then we would be much wiser! But then again, I face the same with many of my items. Even reputable dealers and collectors are sometimes not sure about the exact origin of certain items, because people in old days travelled more than we are commonly aware of and with it the jewelry and its designs. A great find - congratulations Frankie. Peter
Thank you, Peter. I reckon if Alaa Eddine doesn`t know where it`s from I don`t have a chance! He knows I always admired his of the same genre. The mystery is part of the romance of loving ethnic jewellery!
Rabah, I see you have a Tuareg/Niger/Mali currency bracelet incorporating the same circumannular designs!
Whatever this bracelet was a good buy for £41! I just wish it could record its` mileage.
A much later correction: this bracelet is much more likely to be Songhai from Mali.
