Very interesting, Cecilia, particularly the fact that it has a lid and can be closed to guard the contents ... a little like a pocket watch. Do you think it might originally have contained a photo or something personal like a lock of hair? Is it a locket?

Yes it is made just like a pocket watcht, probably a technical solution the silversmith was familiar with. My guess is it would have contained a lock of hair. And yes locket is a more apropriate term than pendant.
