This would have been part of a larger necklace with chains and two other smaller differently shaped boxes with dangles

Dear Cordelia; This is a very nice piece indeed. I believe that this was originally a head ornament. I have a similar piece (with two side ornaments - posted on EJ some time ago...), which I bought as well as a necklace in the souk of Tunis. They are becoming rare! Congratulations. Peter
