Rings from Harrar Ethiopia

Silver. Detail of granulation. Acquired in Africa in the 1960s and old then. The ring on the right was worn crown down for many years as evidenced by the worn away granulation along the sides of the crown and adjoining band.Thank you Ingrid for posting your examples or I never would have recognized these.

  • very nice rings and interesting to read about the wear. I never really thought about rings being worn the other way round. They are really beautiful with the Granulation.  I recently tried to get a Jimma ring on Ebay, but lost twice, as I was not at home at the time of the auctions end and my bid was just outbid by 0.50 Euros........ But they were far away from the Quality of These.

  • Beautiful rings! I really like them a lot...

  • yes beautiful, is wish I had seen them when I was in Harar. But is think is was to disturbed by the
sick people laying in the streets and many stoned!!!
  • Thank you Carry, Betty, and Eva.  I am really taken with them.

Eva I so hate losing auctions at the last moment.  I use AuctionSniper instead of placing regular bids.  I watch a lot of auctions for Ethiopian rings, if you message me with what you want I might be able to send you some item #s that match.

  • Hi Lynn, these are  very nice examples of Harrar rings, I love especially the smaller one so softened through wear and the lovely finishing on the outer circles, both of them. Both  pieces of good quality silver.  The problem with these rings is that they are often so small and can be warn on the pink only.

Like I wrote earlier these rings were very popular amongst the expatriate ladies to wear on the pink as a so called dinner ring.   Well done Lynn.

  • Thank you Ingrid!  I would never have found them without your photos.  I really love them and they are striking to wear.  Yes they are quite small, US 4.5 and 5.5 but luckily I have even tinier fingers so I can wear them.
