Does anyone know anything about this pendant or similar? See the next image for the rear ... with signature. Thanks, in advance.
Classical islamic amulet engraved by the "throne" verse from holy Quran...google it, it is regarded by any as the most powerful talismanic writing in the islamic world.
This particular shape was democratized through the late Ottoman empire when it was a common export throughout the muslim world and often brought back by pilgrims from holy places...one can find them everywhere especially in the western islamic world.
Yours is hand engraved and belongs to a local tradition but patronizinf the crescent shape which is highly tied to the ottoman influence.
Back is engraved with manufacture date on the islamic calendar but written in both arabic (indian) numerals and western ones which complies with the relative late date of 1963 on the western calendar.
the use of both numerals is striking!
the curved engraving (flower?) is evocating some old ottoman patterns!
The bail on the other hand is very much eastern in its feel
Both last arguments would vote for somewhere in the middle east or even further into the east in asia... i have a feel from yemen or oman though!!
Nice selection
Thanks so much for this, Alaa.
