Two mother-of-pearl buckles with religious iconographical themes. From the Kayseri area, folk art. Originally set in a metal (often silver) frame. The representations are 'St. Georges slaying the Dragon' (top) and 'the Nativity' (bottom). On exhibit in the Kayseri Museum of Archaeology. (© Dick Osseman).PS: Placed in the Byzantine section of the museum, without specific dating nor mention of the origin. My personal appreciation: much younger than 'Byzantine' (395-1071); probably 18th-19th century. Rum (Anatolian Greek) or Armenian.
