Mdawar

  • Great Edith, I have something very similar but never knew where they were from......They were obnly sold as North African. I'll post now. Mine dont seem to have any stamp or mark that I could decipher....

  • Very nice, i like the simplicity of these fibulas.

  • Forgot to ask, were you told what "Mdawar" mean?

  • if i am not mistaken, madawar means "round"

  • Ahhh!  I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense!  Thanks Ayis.  Sethom still refers to the larger fibule from other areas of Tunisia as "khlal"...is there some specific trait that distinguishes madawar from khlal, or is it simply a matter of a regional preference for one name over the other?

  • well maybe a regional difference but "mdawar" could be used where many types of fibulas are used as to distinguish the round ones from the others (triangle shaped?)

    Mdawar ==> Round

    Khlal ==> Pin, brooch or fibula

    Khlal mdawar ==> round pin
