Gujarat? Silver Amulet Necklace

Three silver amulets on the original cotton thread with deeply carved melon beads. The center pendant is double-sided with the same deep repousse, hinged, and sealed. I originally thought this was from Pakistan, but recently have seen similar single pendants attributed to Gujarat. The little jump rings are twisted along half their length which also appeared in the pendants said to be from Gujarat.

  • Could also be Rajasthan. Rajasthan, Gujarat and parts of Pakistan have a shared jewellery tradition that goes back centuries before the creation of the Indo-Pakistan border in 1947.

  • But the arrangement of the 3 amulets resembles traditional Kutch necklaces.

  • Thank you for your thoughts, Preethi.  If you have seen any similar examples I would love to see them.  I agree the configuration resembles Kutch necklaces -- I have seen three amulet necklaces from Afghanistan with mixed silver and less detail on the repousse.
