Belt worn with a Lazarka (St. Lazarus ) costume, worn eight days before Easter. Straldza village, Yambol area , Byala village in Sliven area or Svetlina village in the Grudovo area in Bulgaria. late 19th c The blue color worked over leather is typical of the area.

  • Interesting that you could so very specifically work out both the purpose and the locale!

  • Actually this is from a book that is on Bulgarian costume. There are several places in Bulgaria this belt is worn and not one. But from same region.  This description came with the belt ie the person selling it to me , but I also gave the information to her via my books i have!  It's good to have reference books. I just purchased another book recently also on Bulgarian costume and jewelry that had photos of these belts also. Coming in the mail.
