Dear Meg. This is a really nice item. I assume that it is from Sumatra? On Socotra Island (south of Yemen) they have similar belts, which originates from the trading routes between Sumatra and Oman/Yemen. Peter
Interesting information about the Yemen-Sumatra trading routes, Peter.
I still wonder if it could not also be Indian. The stamp (RA?) seems to rule out Yemen as a possible origin - I do not know about Sumatra though.
This way or the other, it is a beautiful, well-made piece.
RA is a stamp that appears on contemporary to vintage Indian jewelry. Many examples on eBay. Lovely jewel.
It is stamped RA. I have a few other silver belts that are not stamped but look similar. Thank you for that information.
