Here is a great website ( don't know if it has been cited here before) on Omani attire. The facemasks absolutely fascinate me, some are golden, some black, some both colors, and they make the lady's head look very birdlike. Some nice historic photos here as well.http://www.omanisilver.com/contents/en-us/index.html

Interesting!
I too am fascinated by the face masks.
I was given a tradtional one in the United Arab Emirates, the one they call the burqa ( the original tradtional one), and it has a black golden colour even though it is made out of leather. I only saw older women wearing them as the younger opted for the more modern black burqa face covering.
I have seen cloth ones from Oman and other regions.
I agree that they give a bird like appearance but I have heard that that is what makes them beautiful as falcons are very prized in the Gulf and so womens beauty is compared to them.
Thanks for the nice website. I"ve read the book;"Memoirs of an Arabian princess" by Bibi Salme (Emily Ruete)
Worth to read, very interesting.
Thanks indeed, Patti - a wonderful website!
Yes Patricia, I've recently discovered it and wanted to share it here, but you beat me to it :) It's really a good site and has a lot of information.
