  • A little about mercury gilding from the net, a very dangerous way to apply gold because it involves dissolving mercury -- I guess we could refer to mad gilders, just like to mad hatters. http://www.philamuseum.org/booklets/7_42_77_1.html

  • Thanks for all that good information, Patti.

I think someone got a good deal with it. Like you I doubt if the mercury gilding technique is used these days.

  • Yes, this is sold, I will include url for listing. I  think the most surprising thing about the listing, aside from the songbirds which are wonderful, is the fact that it uses mercury gilding, like the Turkoman gold wash which is a very dangerous method of gilding, surely not used anymore.

Buckle is silver with mercury gilding-song birds and it has a stylized floral ornaments.
Symbolizes fertility. Originates from the region of city Sofia.
    Massive and large belt buckle!
At the zenith of the Ottoman Empire in Bulgaria started the Renaissance and craftsmen began to make very
    beautiful things.
Buckles are 100% genuine and are from the 19th century before the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire.
Buckles "pafti" are made silver alloy.
All are handmade and even a master has not done the same pairs.
Anyone would be proud to have these buckles in their collection.

Please be patient and read the entire description of the listing.

  • Did this sell already? It`s a lovely example. Patti, do you have the eBay number please? I`d like to see the additional information.

The only proviso I would add is that there are some very skilled artisans currently crafting pafti. They are not trying to defraud. They are making them as costume parts for the myriad of traditional dance groups.

This looks like the real deal to me though.

  • Hi, thanks for sharing. looks interesting, I will have a look on ebay.

  • looks wonderful! Surely worth to get,  but it is not in my range of collecting...... Hope someone else will enjoy to get it!
