Dear fellow members, I would like to enlist your help in the following matter. I am interested in buying the below mentioned books, but not being in the position to have a look inside these books before purchasing, I would like to have your feedback on these titles. For me it's interesting to know if the texts are informative and correct, if the photos are of high quality and clear, and if you think it's worth to have it in your book collection. basically, i am looking for good titles on the subject of central asian jewellery, arts and crafts, textiles and clothing etc. so if you have other titles that are also interesting, please don't hesitate to share that information with me.
book titles:
- Traditional Jewellery from Soviet Central Asia and Kazakhstan : 19th and 20th Centuries From the Collection of the Museum of Oriental Art Moscow
- Kazakh jewellery
- National clothes of kazakh people
many thanks in advance!

ooooh ! LOT of interesting things to read here !! but .... LOT of english ... ;-) well, I have to take my time :-)
Happy to have met this web site ! :-)
Hi Frankie,
so far I'm loving the book. Wish the book was bigger! I will upload some photos of the bookpages to share here. Need to take the photos in daylight for better results. Haha, A tour to Kazakhstan? nah.. So far I've only heard disappointing stories from other collectors on this site, that there are only inferior pieces to be bought in those countries since most good stuff already left the country long ago. And even if you manage to find something you like, it would be almost impossible to take it out of the country. Customs will confiscate it when detected. No antiques are allowed to be exported, not the legal way at least.
You`ll fill us in on how you find the book when you`ve gone into it further, wont you Howah?
And maybe a few of the illustrations on the site here? You are going to be the expert! I`m expecting a tour to Kazakhstan now. Or should I not hold my breath?

Hi Frankie and others,
I did buy the book ' Jewellery craft by masters of Central Asia' and I'm happy I did. Although the price was hefty, I do feel that it's worth it since it's a rare titel. It focuses mainly on Kazakh jewellery, but has nice examples from the other stans as well, and even from the Caucasus. I picked it up today from the post office and am going through the book now.

hey, the rijksmuseum voor volkenkunde is not in breda anymore, but in leiden nowadays. the museum moved many years ago. the islamic jewellery displayed there is not a separate exhibition, but a part of their permanent collection and specifically the southwest and central asia exhibition hall. it's only a small collection, but overall the museum has some very nice items on display. on wednesday the entrance is for free!
yes, would love to see your first purchase..
I have not been in The Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Breda. I want to go ones, I did not know if they have temporary exhibitions or a permanent exhibition of ethnic jewelry. Indeed, it is good to shop around for books. I bought some books from Amazon.com. But I prefer to see a book first before buying. When I'm on vacation abroad I always visit secondhand bookstores. Some times you have a bargain! I'm living in Utrecht, central in Holland. My first buy was a little silver Chinese Chi-Chi pendant with jade when I was 19, now 35 years ago! I did wear it very often I will post a picture of it soon.
Rijksmuseum is where I first saw my first in person Yakut pieces, I even remember what show case they were in when I viewed them in the early 80's. They had a great Tibetan collection also.
Hey Johanne, I just bought and received the book 'the Treasures of the Kazakh steppes Of gold and grass: nomads of Kazakhstan' for €10 from de Slegte too! For €10 it's a very nice addition to my book collection, but there are better books on this subject as I learned now through this forum.
I bought the other books about Central Asia, a.o. Uzbekistan, also secondhand from de Slegte. It really pays to shop around for books. The price range is very big! So I always check online from different sites the prices before making a choice. I have the little book 'Van Zilver Goud en Cornalijn' too. I got it from the dealer when I bought my first Turkoman piece in Amsterdam almost 10 years ago. I'm now looking all over the internet for other interesting books to increase my knowledge level. Have you ever been to the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Breda? They have some nice Turkoman and Uzbek jewelry on display. The wereldmuseum had an exhibition last year about ethnic jewelry and the collection was quite good. I bought the catalogue too. I first got interested in ethnic jewellery when I visited the ethnic jewellery exhibition from the Rene van der Star collection in the Kunsthal back in 2002. Where do you live? I live in Rotterdam..
Bedankt voor het vriendenverzoek Howah! Do you have: Treasures of the Kazakh steppes Of gold and grass: nomads of Kazakhstan.? I bought it about a year ago by De Sleghte for €9,95! This is the only book special about Kazakh I have.
Usbekistan, erbe der Seidenstrasse( Kalter, Pavaloi) and the Schletzer book; Alter Silberschmuck der Turkmenen are my favorites. I bought the Schletzer book in Germany a year ago fot €48! New!
A lovely small book is : Van Zilver Goud en Cornalijn, Turkmeense sieraden uit Centraal Azië, uitgave Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde Breda. I think it will be in your possession too.
