Interesting items on ebay, the first a fibula, very nice but clearly with replaced stones and at a very high price

The second has some genuinely old ( or what appears to be) pendants on it particularly the round ones in between the niello. At a lower price -- In the real world, I would put this one at a higher price than the fib set.

  • Actually, kind of interesting to me since I do not have the expertise yet to make really excellent judgements in purchasing jewellery and have been tempted to buy things from this person. This forum has really helped inform me on what to look for when analyzing a piece of jewelry to determine its authenticity.  I am more conversant with Turkoman jewelry than North African and I am always happy to get a little education from the experts.
  • An irritating dealer, not really worth wasting time on ...
  • I will add, that I think somebody should contact this person because he is not representing his wares properly and his buyers are    not getting what they think. The strangest thing to me is the pricing -- I just don't get the prices at all. Probably something for one of his buyers to do, however, not us. Maybe he will join this forum, what fun that would be!
  • Perfectly summised Patti.. Maybe we should send him a link to our converstions it would indeed be interesting to see what he thinks of our opinions.

  • This is what I have been noticing about all the pieces, there are a lot of quality elements which stand out clearly to most people who have bought this type of jewelry, but they are mixed together and mislabeled and very strangely priced. It would be fun to hear from Coutchillo about his creative adventure in elemental mixing. I think I would much rather possess a rather mundane looking but original and clearly sourced piece, than all of this fantasy, especially at those prices. And the fact that he is attributing his jewelry to the late 19 century is deceiving -- maybe some of the parts are from that era, but certainly not the whole piece. Altogether an interesting dealer.
  • The fibula is a mixture of three different pieces to my eye, beads and cabachon from ait ouarzguit, chains fron further east along the souss valley  coins and fibs from the atlas mountains.

The parure has elements of a shape which I always look out for , but again a patchwork of elements. not a cohesive assembly at all

  • Thanks Ayis, surprised to hear that the stones on the fib are original, due to color  and transparency. I have seen the round pendants before ( second item) but only out of context, never on an original piece.
  • First fibula set has a wonderful fibula chain from the ait ouaouzguit, actually the stones are genuine no problem, but they also added half fibula chains and coin chain wich is relly really odd!!

It is only meant to add weight and make it heavier on the scale!!

Second one is really a theater piece with many many carachters begining with a false chain (original were larger braided silver wires), the triangles are copies from the same silversmith who has made the other headress that was sold.

What remains are the other 3 bigger pendants wich seem original but of a very low quality and probably replaced little pendants

The round pendants are a mystery but they weren't used in headresses only necklaces, i remain skeptical!

Overall if it was genuine, it would cost in the thousands!!
