Algerian Ladies

Just love the jewelry in this old image which I snitched off ebay. The big prayer boxes look distinctively Algerian. What do some of the North African experts think about the authenticity of the jewelry visa vi the place here?

  • Fits perfectly

Small fibulas of this type are common among pastoralists from south eastern Morocco to north eastern Algeria, in the southern saharan foothills of atlas mountains

They are often used as clasps for headscarves and veils, secure fastener in a way around the braids for example...

In your picture, old coloured glass semm to have been used!

  • There is normaly always extra pieces in case the textil gets cuted, the cloth in not sown

There is also on the weil. There is a prayer bead .

  • You are very welcome. about the small fibs -- what is the stone in them do you think? Garnets? Glass? BTW I see another small fib fastened to the dress of the lady on the right and she appears to have tiny keys hanging from her fib chain.

    Thank you for sharing patti

  • I notice that the girl on the left has a couple of simple fibulas tucked up by her neckline. I guess she needed a couple of extra to hold her cape.
